Behind every dependable weather application is a lot of infrastructure that most people never see. We’ve been adding automated testing to Boxer, our cloud-native weather data processing system, to improve weather data monitoring across our importer stacks. These tests help us detect delayed, incomplete, or missing data before it becomes a customer problem.

We’re now processing the EUMETNET OPERA composite, making pan-European radar reflectivity available alongside the North American radar products we already offer. But combining radar data from more than 30 countries and over 160 radars comes with some unique challenges. In this post, we look at what those challenges look like, how they compare with MRMS, and how we’re working with the data in Boxer and Terrier.

We’ve begun testing a new European weather radar composite to expand our international data offerings. While the data is reliable, quality control presents some interesting challenges compared to the U.S. MRMS mosaic. Here’s what we’ve learned so far, and where we may take it next.
