Designing Around User Needs

Goal

  • Save my Smoke and AQI dashboard project appropriately and upload it to GitHub.
  • Map out a tentative design for my Fishing app project (visuals, data variables…)
  • Talk to fishermen and research favorable fishing conditions.

Workflow

With the smoke and AQI project coming to a close, we interns were allowed to pick our next project. With that news, I was excited to start working on my idea for a fishing app that lets you locate all the lakes in Michigan and view the weather and fishing forecast for each location. According to a fisherman I talked to, temperature, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, cloud cover, and even the moon phase could all affect fishing conditions.

My project will incorporate these variables into both short-term (hourly) and long-term (daily) forecasts for a “fishing index” that serves as a simple search function. I am still working on the design for how I would like the app to run, but I know I want to open the app with a map of Michigan to look up any lake (or nearby body of water) and get the fishing forecast for that location.

Midway through my progress, I realized that although the chapter on smoke and AQI had come to an end for me in this internship, it was still important to properly save my project for both experimental and documentation purposes. I spent some time merging all my changes into the repo. I only made adjustments to the dashboard folder and the backend data overlay folder, so I combined them into a project folder, which was then uploaded to GitHub. This process did not take long; however, I had never used GitHub before, so I spent some extra time getting familiar with it and making sure everything was working properly.

For the rest of the week, I conversed with Claude and ChatGPT to get inspiration for potential app design features. An example of this was about how I am going to format my forecast hours with information. ChatGPT suggested I plot “rising pressure” versus “29.98 to 30.19inHg.” I like this idea, but I think some variables (like temperature or wind) should be more specific to the fishing trend rather than just general. My goal is to find a happy medium between what fishermen and meteorologists want to see for this app.

Prompts Used

In my last project, I found that asking ChatGPT for a Claude prompt worked really well, so I thought I would try a similar approach for this project. I asked ChatGPT about Claude Design and how to build my project directly into that environment. Then, I spent some time getting familiar with Claude Design. ChatGPT is helping me come up with a starting point to feed into Claude Design and make visual adjustments that way. Typically, I query the data before creating the design. Given this is a summer-long project rather than a two-week project (like Smoke and AQI), I’ll design first.

Then, I gave ChatGPT an overview of what I’m thinking for my project, and that’s where it came up with the idea of converting numerical data points into phrases that fishermen care about, rather than what meteorologists would like to see. As mentioned, I’m working with AI to identify what the app will display before we continue with the design process.

What Worked

I hope ChatGPT can follow directions and generate a prompt that Claude can understand for building my app. I’m still working with ChatGPT to get what I want in architecture, and it seems responsive so far. Other than that, Claude Design seems really easy to work with. However, it can take a while to make changes.

What Didn’t Work

I don’t think I am at a point in this project where I have found anything that “did” or “didn’t” work yet. I’m working on the design process, and AI has helped guide me toward a cohesive design. I plan to implement all technical modifications before running it through Claude Design.

Lessons Learned

SAVE YOUR WORK! I was very excited to start something new because I am passionate about my next project. I was so eager to get started that I almost forgot to save my smoke and AQI project, which could be problematic if I wanted to return to it at a later date. Sometimes it’s better to finish what’s been started before moving on to something else.
